It Started in Paris
French engineer Georges Claude first demonstrated neon lighting at the Paris Motor Show in 1910. By 1923 he’d brought it to America, selling two signs to a Los Angeles car dealership. Crowds stopped in the street to stare. People called them “liquid fire.”
Through the 1930s to 60s, neon became the visual language of modern business. Las Vegas, Times Square, Sydney’s main streets — all of it blazing in hand-bent glass tubes filled with glowing gas. Every letter shaped by hand. Slow, expensive, fragile — but unforgettable.
Neon Never Really Died
Cheaper signage pushed traditional glass neon out through the 70s and 80s. But it never disappeared — it just moved into art spaces, bars and the back of every designer’s mind who couldn’t let go of the glow.
